Sports Rap…

The new year started off quickly for local sports teams.  The Detroit Red Wings played the Chicago Blackhawks at Wrigley Field in the Winter Classic.  The Winter Classic has become an annual NHL game on New Year’s day for the league.  Detroit won the game 6 – 4.  Also on New Year’s Day, the Michigan State Spartans played in the Capital One Bowl game against the Georgia Bulldogs.  The Bulldogs defeated Michigan State 24-12.

The Lions fired coach Rod Marinelli on 12/29/08.  Jim Schwartz is the new head coach.  The NFL draft is on April 25th & 26th.  The Lions have the first overall pick and the 20th pick as well in the first round.  Hopefully they can start developing a young team that WINS!

The Super Bowl XLIII (43) was played on February 1st in Tampa Bay.  The Pittsburgh Steelers defeated the Arizona Cardinals 27-23.

The Pistons have been on a down streak lately, and are sliding fast.  The one Piston to represent the team in the all-star game was Allen Iverson; a trade that has not helped the team as of yet.

The Michigan State basketball team has won the Big 10 title.  They have high hopes of getting to Ford Field to play in the Final Four.

Spring is around the corner, and with that comes baseball.  The Tiger’s spring training began and we hope they can bounce back and have a good year.  Justin V will have to be a key element to their pitching this year.  Opening Day in Detroit is April 10th.

Locally, the Wyandotte Varsity Basketball team has had a good year.  They will end up finishing in 2nd place in the Mega White this year.  Good Job Bears!

Sports Rap…

This just in: Silent James has a new side kick, Richard (the Sports Brain) W..  Moving on to the sports biz…

The defending Stanley Cup Champion Detroit Redwings opened up their season with a banner raising ceremony against the Toronto Maple Leafs.  The Leafs won the game 3 – 2, but this was one game of 82.  They hope to repeat as champions and would be the first team to do so since the Redwings last did it in 1997 and again in 1998.  The Wings have won the cup 11 times.  GO WINGS!

The Detroit Tigers had a very rough year finishing in last place in their division with a 74 and 88 record.  This was not expected from a team that had one of the highest payrolls in baseball.  Hopefully they will regroup and get better for next year.  The Tampa Bay Rays and Philadelphia Phillies played in the World Series.  It was the Rays first ever trip to the Fall Classic.  The Phillies won in 5 games.

The Detroit Pistons opened up their season on October 29th at home against the Indiana Pacers.  They traded Chauncey Billups shortly into the season for A.I. (Allen Iverson).  Trade evaluation time: Silent J.M. - Thumbs up      Brain - Thumbs Up   Mr. Sauve - To be DETERMINED, no defense!

And about our Detroit Lions.  The bad news is they are still horrible and winless.  The good news is they fired their general manager Matt Millen and traded a player to get many draft picks for next year.  Maybe the new GM can come in and rebuild.

In college football, Michigan State had a very good season going 9-3 while the University of Michigan is having one of their worst seasons ever.  The two played each other on October 25th and the Spartans won 35-21.  Michigan State will be playing in a bowl game this year.

Lastly, but most importantly and locally, our Wyandotte Bears football team “Three-Peated” as Mega White champs and finished 10-2.  They were in the playoffs for the 3rd straight year.  Congrats Bears!  Next year they will play in the brand new Down River League.

Sports Rap…

Since our last report, we now have a college football champ (the Louisiana State Tigers) and a Super Bowl champ (the New York Giants).  Coach Lloyd Carr retired from coaching at the University of Michigan.  OH, and the Detroit Lions finished off their season in typical fashion:  LOSING and going 7-9 on the year.

The Detroit Pistons and Redwings are currently in first place in each of their divisions.  We are hopefully looking at two long playoff runs for each team.  The Michigan State Spartans basketball team is competing for the Big 10 title and look like they could contend for the NCAA Final Four.

Baseball season is right around the corner.  Pitchers and catchers reported on February 14th and the rest of the teams will report shortly after for workouts.  The Detroit Tigers will begin their hopes of winning the World Series in Lakeland, Florida for spring training.  Opening day will be here in Detroit on April 31st versus the Kansas City Royals.

The Tigers have added a few new faces this year.  As we reported last time, they had traded for shortstop Edgar Renteria.  Since then, they also added a very good hitting third baseman in Miguel Cabrera and a good left handed starting pitcher in Dontrelle Willis.  They will be without a big player in pitcher Joel Zumaya for most of the year however.  It should be a fun season to watch.

Sports reported by “Silent J.M.” (James M.) and “LOUD MOUTH” L. (Patrick L.)

 Special Olympic Report:

Special Olympic season is around the corner for RHS Transition athletes.  Our bowling tournament is on Saturday, April 26th at Plaza Lanes in Plymouth.  This is a new bowling alley for us to visit.

Our Area 23 Spring games competition date is Friday, May 9th at Livonia Franklin High School.  We will begin training shortly to get in shape and have entry scores.  Events at spring games are: 50 meter dash, 100 meter dash, 200 meter dash, 4 X 100 relay, softball throw, shot put, standing long jump, and running long jump.  Athletes compete in 2 events at spring games.

Summer state games will be held May 29th – May 31st at Central Michigan University.  Athletes invited stay overnight with other athletes and coaches.  They compete during the day and attend a dance on Friday night.  It is a lot of fun.

We currently have 46 active Special Olympians in our program.  Anyone can join.  All they need is a physical from a doctor/ physician on a physical form Mr. Sauve, and they need to show they can demonstrate appropriate behavior when out in the community.
