parents, guardians
and caregivers that
want to learn about the Skills Center
If your
son/daughter/client will be attending the Skills Center, it is important
for you to have knowledge and understanding as to how the education
process works at Jo Brighton. Therefore the staff, teachers, and PTO
are offering and encouraging you to take a tour of the school. During
the tour you will have an opportunity to view the classroom setting,
talk to staff and observe the students in their daily activities.
Once a student attends the Skill Center, their
programming may consist of the following:
- Vocational
Fundamentals (approximately 14-17)
The students learn
fundamentals (basic) academic skills. These skills include functional
math, reading, time concepts and money skills.
Students are also exposed to some leisure activities as well
as cooking skills and hobbies.
- Life and Vocational
Readiness Classes (approximate age 14-17)
Home Management Skills
Healthy Lifestyles Skills
Eating and planning healthy meals
Leisure and Recreation
Physical recreation
Social Skills
Community Based
Instruction
- Vocational
Exploration Classes (approximate age 17-21)
Building Maintenance
Taught the skills necessary for safe building maintenance and
janitorial skills
Building Trades -
Taught basic skills involved in carpentry, plumbing and tool recognition
Business Practices
Taught the skills necessary to work in an office or retail environment
Computer & Business
Technologies Taught skills to allow the student to feel
comfortable in the modern workplace where computers and office machines
are used.
Commercial Kitchen
Taught skills for working in a fast food restaurant and food service
industry
Commercial Bakery
Taught skills for working in a bakery
Commercial Catering
Taught skills for working in the catering food service

(approximate age 20-24)
Hospital Services
Classroom Taught work skills while training in the Wyandotte Henry
Ford Hospital
Mall Services
Classroom Taught work skills while training in the Southland Mall
stores and restaurants
- Life Options
(approximate age 24-26)
This class is designed
for older students and focuses on the development and implantation of
the students transition plan. Instruction includes community
vocational training, volunteer experiences, apartment living and
experiences in self-employment as well as job related classroom
instruction. Job placement and follow-up services will also be part of
their program.
